Onkwehonwe Games aims to build relationships and inspire respect for all indigenous peoples by sharing baseline history and culture of the Six Nations people through traditional games.  We understand that everything is interconnected and use games to teach and discuss geography and land, our creation story, language and traditional understandings of health, lifestyle and connection to nature.

All of our programs begin with basic history where students learn about who the Six Nations are, traditional territories, migrations, about the Law of Peace and the beginning of a meaningful partnership between the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca and Tuscarora in the formation of the Six Nations Confederacy. Students will also learn about family and social structure, as well as some traditional teachings and stories.

In response to COVID 19 we are now offering online workshops in addition to our outdoor programs. All of our programs can be geared towards many ages and abilities from Grade 4 to Secondary and Post-Secondary school students. Generally our workshops run 1-2 hours, however we are happy to work with each group to provide a program that suits your needs.

Online Programs

Our Online Programs are run through Zoom and can be booked all year long.
There are a few options within our Online Programs:

1. Basic History - just discussion, no focus on games.

2. Traditional Games - discussion of history and games, includes demonstrations of games.

3. Traditional Games with Game Kits - participants learn about the games and also have the opportunity to play the games.  School or participants will need to order and purchase Game Kits in advance of their workshop.  Game Kits are made to order and require 3-6 weeks to be completed and delivered.

4. Traditional Games with Game Construction - participants learn about all the games and have the opportunity to construct and play one of two games, Bone & Toggle or our version of the Peach Pit game.  School or participants will need to order and purchase the game construction kits in advance of their workshop.  We ask for 2-3 weeks to complete and deliver these kits.

• Bone & Toggle - participants are given the stick or toggle, leather string and bone to put together, participants can then draw or paint on the toggle a design inspired by what they have just learned.

• Peach Pit/Checkers Game - participants are given 5 rounds of wood on which they draw or paint a design inspired by what they have just learned.
